Noah's Ark Found! Resistivity Scans Reveal a Ship
On 11 September 1959, while studying around 10,000 aerial photographs, Captain Ilhan Durupinar of the Turkish army noticed a boat-shaped object in a photograph taken above the Ararat Mountains in Eastern Turkey. He believed the shape could not have been formed by nature, and after calculating its length and width, concluded it was possibly the remains of Noah's Ark. An expedition was sent the following year, and the object was located and reported in Life Magazine on 5 September 1960.
Having read that article, Ronald E. Wyatt, an anesthetist from Tennessee, believed the site required further investigation. Using ground-penetrating radar and metal detectors on several trips during the 1980s, Wyatt's scans revealed what appeared to be vertical wall structures within the hull shape — symmetry and layout he believed was evidence of a man-made object. A square-shaped object identified by the radar was dug up by the Turkish military and later analysed by Galbraith Laboratories in the United States, which confirmed it contained organic carbon — consistent with petrified wood rather than rock. A metallic object close to the side of the Ark, shaped like a large rivet head surrounded by a washer, was tested by Teledyne Allvac Laboratories and found to be a complex alloy including aluminium and titanium — neither of which occurs in pure form in nature, and both of which require complicated refining processes to produce. Repeated metal-detector surveys found this metal distributed in a uniform, grid-like pattern across the top surface of the ship, with none found in the ground outside the vessel.
The 2014 Resistivity Survey
In late 2014, the Turkish government granted permission to John Larsen of New Zealand to scan the buried remains using deep-penetration Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT), a technique developed in the 1920s for oil and mineral exploration. Ten longitudinal scans covered the ship's full length, with three additional cross-section scans of the surrounding ground, compiled into a 3D file with topographic survey data. The scanning took nearly three weeks. Different materials show different electrical resistivity, allowing variations in subsurface composition to be identified without excavation. The first image penetrated 34.8 metres below ground — well beyond the 8-metre range of the earlier radar scans — and confirmed that the boat-shaped hull visible above ground continued below it, in the form of a giant ship with a deep-hulled design.
Three Decks, as Genesis Describes
Genesis 6:16 records God's instruction to Noah: "With lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it." The resistivity images show three distinct flat surfaces with the appearance of internal deck floors, each with a different resistivity to the material between them, extending across the full width of the ship and running parallel to one another. The uppermost deck layer measures approximately 3.2 metres thick — exactly 6 cubits. The middle layer measures 4.7 metres (9 cubits). The third, lowest layer sits at the bottom of the hull. At the rear of the middle deck, a wall is visible positioned at exactly 90 degrees to the floor.
Matching the Biblical Dimensions
The ancient cubit — 20.6 inches (0.522 metres) — was the standard unit of measurement for both Egypt and Chaldea, civilisations established by Noah's descendants after the Flood. Genesis 6:15 records God's specification: "And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: the length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits."
The internal length, measured both by tape measure and by Leica laser survey instrument, was found to be exactly 300 cubits. Where rock has penetrated the right side, the hull has become distorted and bulged outward, making the ship appear wider than it actually is — but a reconstructed image, with the broken right-side section moved back into its original position, shows an internal width of approximately 50 cubits (26.1 metres). For height, the three deck spaces measured floor-to-ceiling are: upper deck 3.2 metres (6 cubits), middle deck 4.7 metres (9 cubits), and bottom deck 7.8 metres (15 cubits) — a total of 15.7 metres, or exactly 30 cubits. Every one of these dimensions equates to a whole number of cubits, with no fractions — further evidence that this is a man-made structure, built at a time when the cubit measurement was in use. There has never been a timber ship of this size built anywhere else in recorded history.
The Central Stairway and Internal Structure
A large area of high resistivity near the centre of the ship, roughly 40 metres long, matches what Ron Wyatt identified with ground-penetrating radar as a central corridor 128 feet (39 metres) long. Its floor slopes downward at a 35-degree angle, flattening out halfway down at the level of the middle deck floor to form what appears to be a landing, before resuming its descent to the bottom deck — consistent with a central stairway connecting all three decks, running perfectly aligned with the length of the ship. Smaller room-sized cavities of high resistivity are also visible elsewhere within the structure.
At the ship's stern, material shaped like a massive rib is attached to a central keelson, both displayed in blue on the composite resistivity images. Contour lines pack tightly around the rib's boundary, indicating a sudden change in material properties at that edge. Where the rib structure remains intact, it is symmetrical on both sides of the vessel, with a semi-circular profile whose resistivity increases toward the inner edge — consistent with timber displaying varying degrees of petrification, the process by which minerals from surrounding mud gradually replace the original organic material, beginning at the exposed surface and working inward.
Distinguishing Ship from Rock
The resistivity images show the hull sitting atop a separate object of markedly different resistivity, resembling a rock upon which the ship has become impaled. Loose surface rock lying on top of the ship shows a sharp, distinct boundary, is very dry and cracked, and exhibits high resistivity — confirming that the ship's hull is made of a completely different material to the rock beneath and around it, consistent with a foreign body of material that fell onto the hull at the point of impact where the structure was damaged.
Summary
The resistivity scans reveal the shape of an immense ship buried beneath the ground, its hull material clearly distinct in resistivity from the rock beneath it. Three flat layers with the appearance of decks were identified, with internal length, width, and height matching the dimensions given in Genesis for Noah's Ark. The three-dimensional shape of the object, together with the petrified timber and metal rivets found within the hull, cannot be explained by natural rock erosion — each is evidence of a man-made structure of ancient origin. In the whole of recorded history, there is only one ship ever constructed with all of these features: Noah's Ark.
